There’s a sinking feeling that overwhelms you when you realized you have done the impossible: Bricked a Galaxy S!!! I used Odin to install a rom on the Galaxy, selected all the options including Re-Partition, selected a pit but no PDA. After pressing start, the operation ran for a few seconds then the phone when dead. And I mean dead: nothing, would not turn on, just a black screen.

The log looks something like this:

This was the log

<ID:0/003> File analysis..
<ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/003> Initialzation..
<ID:0/003> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/003> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
<ID:0/003> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/003> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/003> Removed!!
<ID:0/003> Completed..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)

So you just flashed a pit file with re-partition and no PDA, PHONE, or CSC file?

Then try this….

Take the battery out. Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds.

Put the battery back in, and hold the download mode sequence for up to a minute. (it took me just 20 seconds!!)

If it kicks into download mode, you are back in business!!!!!

The performance of this good can only be described as excellent. It’s fast and stable. Very fast.

It comes with a very dark theme, but that can be changed to a brighter appearance. I’ve experienced no battery drain and no lag. All apps work fine. The GPS works well and quickly.

Full instructions for the flashing of the rom is available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128121.

Since updating to Froyo, my Samsung Galaxy S freezes periodically and the battery drains far too rapidly. It seems to be draining faster at home where the reception is poor. Thus at night if the phone is not on the charger, I can wake up to a completely drained battery. The freeze can be fixed by removing and reinserting the battery. But this is only a temporary solution.

It seems that the lock-ups happen in areas of poor signal reception. The phone comes factory set to automatically switch between 2G and 3G in order to pick up the best signal. This seems to cause the system to lock-up every so often. The Galaxy S has an option to select either GSM or WCDMA only. I have switched my phone to GSM only and there appears to be some improvement in the battery performance so far, as the phone is no longer constantly searching for a WCDMA signal.
The setting is found at SETTINGS+WIRELESS AND NETWORKS+MOBILE NETWORKS+NETWORK MODE.

There is a hidden menu that accesses the separate bands within both GSM and WCDMA where the user can select the exact reception band required. The hidden menu is found by typing the following on the key pad *#*#197328640#*#* then select DEBUG SCREEN+PHONE CONTROL+NETWORK CONTROL+BAND SELECTION.

After updating my firmware to Android Froyo, I noticed the market place had not been updated and that Skype could not be installed, even though the latest Skype 1.0.2 for Android officially supports the Samsung Galaxy S (with Android OS 2.2) http://blogs.skype.com/garage/2010/12/skype_102_for_android.html. It just did not appear in the market place, and attempting to download from the Skype website resulted in a 404 Error.

The app MarketEnabler (available from the Android Marketplace) is a Sim tool application that allows you to change the Sim issuer code in the running system. It requires a rooted phone, su app, and busybox. Once I had change the issuer code I was updated to the new marketplace and was able to download and install Skype.

The Samsung GT-I9000 Galaxy S phones have lately been modified so that they cannot be put into download and recovery modes using the standard three-button combos. This prevents the user from forcefully upgrading the phone’s hardware among other things. This guide has a fix that, if followed carefully, should bypass this. While it personally worked for me, your mileage may vary.

Disclaimer: Please note this process is highly dangerous, and can permanently brick your device if not follow properly. While the success rate is over 99%, proceed at your own risk. The instructions provided herein are ‘as is’ only.

Note:

To go in Download mode, press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power Button.

For Recovery mode, press and hold Volume Up + Home + Power Button.

Make sure that you have:

Samsung drivers preinstalled (Kies should recognize your phone)

ADB installed on your machine (refer to this guide here to ensure that)

USB Debugging mode must be turned on in device’s settings (go to “Settings –> Applications –> Development” menu)

Without plugging in the USB cable, type *#0228# in the phone dialer, and ensure that Voltage value is AT LEAST 3800 (mV). (This must be done WITHOUT plugging in the USB cable).

Odin3 Multi-downloader v1.3 (can be downloaded here)

Modified SBL tar file (Download here)

Removed SIM and external microSD cards

When all set, start Odin in administrator mode (or run it with an admin account). Load the downloaded TAR file as PDA, and make sure that Re-partition is UNCHECKED and Phone Bootloader Update is CHECKED.

Now plug the USB cable into the phone. Start a new command prompt window and navigate to the folder/directory where you have installed ADB.

Put the phone in download mode using adb method. Enter the following command:

adb reboot download

This will put your phone in download mode. Check Odin now, and if ID:COM has turned yellow, you’re good to go. (Again ensure that you have not selected any other files that the one in PDA, and that re-partition and bootloader update options are correct)

Once you’re satisfied, press the Start button on Odin. The flash will take about three seconds, after which your phone will reboot automatically.

That’s it. This should fix your download and recovery mode 3-button combo issue. You can now apply any mods with the normal procedure.

So it was off to http://www.unlockit.co.nz . This site ( the APN Changer) helps you to change your APN Data settings for your Iphone or Ipod 3G if you are not using an official Iphone Carrier. Using Safari on your Iphone, you go to the site and create your profile. Once the profile is created you can then install the profile, and Voila!! your internet is back up!!
